Identification of priority areas for mangrove restoration in the Sanctuary of Flora and Fauna Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, Colombia 2023-2024
Mangrove forests are strategic ecosystems that provide a variety of services to humanity, but are vulnerable to both human-caused and natural impacts. The Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, one of Colombia’s largest and most productive wetland systems, is home to an extensive area of these forests. Despite ongoing management efforts, the area has been experiencing declines in mangrove coverage, the associated fauna, and fishery resources in some sites of the wetland.
The Marine and Coastal Research Institute (Invemar) has contracted MoAm’s services to help identify priority areas for mangrove restoration and the threats affecting them. This initiative is part of the broader project titled “Studies to formulate a strategy for the hydric and ecological restoration of the Sanctuary of Flora and Fauna of the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta – SFF CGSM.” Our work involves active participation from the local communities.
