Birds Coastal Lagoons Guajira

Assessment of the diversity and ecological dynamics of bird communities in coastal lagoons of La Guajira, Caribbean of Colombia 2024-2025

The coastal lagoons and wetlands of La Guajira cover approximately 44703 ha, and represent key habitats for avian diversity and conservation in northern Colombia. Over more than 25 years of fragmented monitoring efforts, at least 250 bird species have been recorded in these ecosystems.

As part of an agreement between Isagen and MoAm, and with the technical support of the Corporación Autónoma Regional de La Guajira, this investigation evaluated the diversity, ecological dynamics, and conservation status of bird communities across major lagoons during two contrasting climatic seasons (rainy and dry). The study includes the following activities:

    • Assessment of the ecological attributes of bird communities
    • Characterization of landscape cover in the coastal lagoons
    • Recording of environmental and physicochemical water variables
    • Development of a proposal for participatory management, including a program and protocol for bird monitoring
    • Dissemmination of results to different stakeholders
