Exploration of Bryozoan Diversity in Remote and Artificial Marine Ecosystems of the Colombian Caribbean 2024-2027

Bryozoans are a highly diverse group of marine invertebrates that colonize a wide range of ecosystems and live in different environmental conditions. Their tolerance to variable water quality facilitates their establishment in fouling communities, where several species have become invasive in coastal environments worldwide. In addition, bryozoans have evolved a variety of chemical adaptations for defense and survival, making different species valuable sources of bioactive compounds with potential biotechnological and pharmaceutical applications.

To advance the knowledge of bryozoan diversity in remote and artificial ecosystems of the Colombian Caribbean, this project focused on the taxonomic analysis of bryozoan specimens from the Museum of Marine Natural History of Colombia – Makuriwa and MoAm. The research is being developed under a funded agreement between the Colombian Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation with MoAm, and comprises the following activities:

  • Conduct the taxonomic identification of bryozoans specimens
  • Assess the occurrence of invasive bryozoan species and species with bioactive potential
  • Evaluate the role of artificial reefs as habitats for bryozoan assemblages
  • Analyze patterns of bryozoan diversity across remote and artificial ecosystems.
