Participatory Assessment of the Biology and Ecology of the Lionfish Pterois volitans Captured with Pots on Fishing Grounds off Dibulla, La Guajira 2025-2026
The lionfish Pterois volitans is an invasive species that has caused unprecedented impacts on marine and coastal ecosystems throughout the Greater Caribbean and western Atlantic. The species can attain high densities and large sizes at depths greater than 30 m, where alternative catching strategies are required.
This project was conducted by MoAm, under a general cooperation agreement between GOAL and Corporación Autónoma Regional de La Guajira (Corpoguajira), aimed at promoting research, management, and monitoring of natural resources and ecosystems. The objective was to assess, through a participatory approach, the biology and ecology of lionfish captured using fishing pots on deep fishing grounds off the coast of Dibulla.
